Next Move is a communication design project exploring how inclusive design and game-based learning can support young adults with disrupted educational pathways, low reading confidence, or dyslexia during their transition into the labour market.
The project began with the question of how complex and often intimidating information surrounding the job application process could be made more approachable, engaging, and stigma-free. Through literature research, surveys, expert interviews, target-group research and co-creation, I investigated the barriers young adults can encounter when engaging with written information and navigating the transition into employment.
The outcome is Next Move, a physical educational board game inspired by the familiar roll-and-move mechanic. Each player's pieces represent individual job applications progressing through the application process. Along the way, players encounter Barriers, Opportunities and Job Interview cards that introduce realistic situations, encourage reflection and provide opportunities to practise communication and interview skills.
The visual design deliberately combines information design, accessibility and playful visual communication. Abstract geometric shapes replace traditional coloured game pieces, while a restrained colour system, clear iconography, strong visual hierarchy and generous spacing support orientation and readability. The accompanying rulebook and multimedia support extend these principles beyond the game board itself.
Rather than presenting employability as a purely individual achievement, Next Move approaches the application process as a journey involving uncertainty, setbacks, decision-making and personal growth. The game creates a low-pressure environment in which players can practise, make mistakes, experience frustration, support each other and ultimately build confidence.
